Thursday morning we all got up early for our adventure on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. It's a 3 and 1/2 hour trip through the San Juan National Forest from Durango up to Silverton (and then another 3 and 1/2 hours back) on an old train (made in 1925). It was an amazing trip- we've never been anywhere as beautiful!
Here's Brady ready for our train adventure!
leaving the station in Durango
such beautiful views!
at times the train tracks get a little close to the mountain side!!
it's tough to see, but on the upper left hand side of the photo are the train tracks right at the edge of the cliff!
view of the Animas River from the train looking down the cliff
Madison on the train
the train on the edge of the cliff
the train blowing out some steam
so pretty
Maddie & Brady enjoyed watching these chipmunks when the train stopped to take on some more water
here the train is taking on 3,000 gallons of water in order to continue on with our journey
it's a 3 and 1/2 hour ride and Brady started to get a little bored with nature- thank goodness for the iphone and for Crash Bandicoot!!
that's the town of Silverton in the distance
finally in Silverton!!
Maddie is a little wind-blown from the train ride!
the train tracks just end right in the middle of the road!
Silverton's public transportation!
there are a couple hundred year 'round residents and the school (K-12) as 35 students!
on the train headed back to Durango!
smoke in the distance- that can't be good!
we came across a small forest fire and had to stop and wait for help to come and put out the fire- the smell was very strong and it was raining ashes!
Maddie & Brady fell asleep during the whole thing, which was good for us because it was a long way back!
