So, Turkey Day as M & B like to call it... we spent Thanksgiving down in Galveston. We stayed at the Moody Gardens Hotel (beautiful hotel!) and had dinner there. Before we checked in,though, we took the ferry over to Bolivar to see the destruction from Hurricane Ike. It was all very sad. The part of the peninsula that we were supposed to stay on is almost completely leveled... not a house still standing. Here are a few pictures:
June 2007 voted the best beach in Texas

This is what Bolivar looks like post-Ike, debris from the destroyed houses on the side of the road for miles
an ice-cream stand gone
buildings just flattened
this house slid off the foundation and the palm tree stopped it
this building is completely hollowed out
someone's house gone
another one destroyed
another one
and another one
even more
and those are the houses that have been destroyed but are at least still standing, so many others, most of them actually are completely gone with just the foundations standing
this one is still standing, but not by much
all the plants that were once green and thriving are brown and most are dead
cars that are abandoned and ruined
this is the gas station
some restaurants
our favorite pizza place
the grocery store and the other gas station
the church
the cemetary- some of the coffins were raised up and came open... very sad
a few more houses
It was sad to see the place that we loved so much destroyed and we can't wait to someday see it cleaned up again. We know that the hurricane has been gone for a while now, but the destruction that Ike left behind took so much away from so many people.Let's hope that the people that are still affected by the storm can soon begin to rebuild their lives.
